Phil Calhoun earned his MBA from California Polytechnic University Pomona in 1984 and began a career path leading into the health care industry. In 1980 he worked in health care services for six years, and upon completing an MBA in 1986, he left healthcare and worked for a Mergers and Acquisition firm from 1986 to 1989. In 1989 Phil joined Downey Hospital as Director of Marketing, where he was instrumental in the launch of Golden Outlook, the first and last private label Medicare HMO in California. Phil recruited doctors, developed marketing plans, and assisted with enrollment into Golden Outlook. He branched out in 1993 to start his first insurance agency as Vice President of Business Development for Western Medical Center. WMC Insurance Services focused on all lines of health insurance.
After building membership in Medicare plans, Phil purchased the agency from the hospital in 1997. He grew the agency by combining Medicare enrollments exceeding 120 a month, agency acquisitions, and effective recruiting of broker subagents. Phil and his business partner added a Medicare-focused Field Marketing Organization (FMO) to combine with the retail health insurance agency, including Medicare, individual, and group clients reaching over $2.5 million in revenue.
In 2016 Phil began the process to exit the WMC partnership, now operating as Beta Benefits. When exit planning efforts failed, Phil orchestrated a partner separation in 2016 and moved the retail clients to Integrity Advisors while divesting the FMO operations to his former partner. Since 2017 Phil increased efforts to grow the retail health agency and expand the work with brokers on commission protection and acquisition, which began in 2014.
The commission protection successes led to acquiring several retiring broker’s clients.
In 2020 Phil’s book “The Health Broker’s Guide to Protecting, Growing and Selling Commissions,” was released. Capitalizing on success since 2014, the momentum from the book, and his articles in California Broker magazine, Phil now focused his efforts solely on commission protection and acquisition.
His consulting work with brokers continues to grow as Phil enjoys helping brokers protect their greatest business value, health commissions. In the process, Phil often acquires retiring brokers’ books of business. Since 2018, he has completed seven acquisitions, has 10 Active commission protection deals under agreement totaling over $2,000,000 annually, and has consulted with a dozen brokers on exit planning.
He enjoys helping active brokers answer their planning questions, leading to proven solutions to reach 100% commission protection. His consulting work includes access to health broker/agent proven legal agreements with experience to personalize solutions for solo brokers, partners, and agencies resulting in tools needed to find buyers or successor candidates when required. Phil plans to expand his success with an active consulting practice in the commission protection and exit planning space exclusively for health brokers through Commission Solutions based on his subject matter expertise.
Phil continues to own and operate Integrity Advisors in Tustin, CA, with a team of seven licensed professionals. Integrity’s clients benefit from a commitment to hear and understand their needs and receive affordable solutions leading to the best in industry-leading service.
